This is a recreation of a device from the early 20th century used for producing a camera flash. The device is a catapult where flash powder is placed on the pan, which is than flung when the trigger is released. At the front of the device is a small lamp, which ignites the powder as it flies through the flame, producing an instant bright fireball.
